Born in 1947 near Jalandhar, India, Salma's family experienced the challenges of the partition of India and Pakistan in her early years. Raised by her mother, Abida, in a village on the outskirts of Sahiwal, she learned the importance of giving, despite facing hardships after losing her father. In 1968, she married Ghulam Farid and moved to a new home in 86/6R, where she continued to embody the spirit of generosity she inherited from her family.
The move to the United States in 1981 marked a new chapter for Salma and her family. Their journey was guided by the principles of hard work, generosity and support, passed down through generations. Salma carried this ethos with her, nurturing it in her children and inspiring them to pursue their dreams.
Salma played a pivotal role in her sons' success, encouraging them to work hard and pursue their ambitions. Salma herself contributed to the family's business ventures, including Tariq Farid's first flower and IT business, which laid the foundation for Edible Arrangements. Her selflessness extended to providing financial support, with her only request being to create something meaningful in her honor.
Tragically, Salma Khatoon passed away in 2005 during a visit to Pakistan, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and compassion. In her memory, her family has dedicated themselves to continuing her philanthropic work by establishing healthcare facilities, distributing food, and providing clean water to those in need.
